Trail Stewardship
Gabrielino National Recreation Trail
As the summer heats up, we have re-focused our volunteer efforts along the much cooler canyon floor of the Aroyyo Seco a few miles upstream from JPL. On our May and June public stewardship days, we had over 20 volunteers make the trip by bike up the canyon to work on sections of Ken Burton and the Gab.
It's hard to believe it, but the last time MWBA worked on lower Ken Burton trail was in 2023. Since then, the brush has crept into the trail corridor, along with a bounty of luscious poison oak.
Our volunteers hacked back actual piles of PO and widened the corridor along the bottom of Ken Burton for all to enjoy. There is more work to be done at the top of Ken Burton, but for now, the bottom 3rd is ready to rip, run, and roll.
In June, another hearty crew of volunteers picked up work right where we left off, moving down into the wash and narrow section of the Gabrielino trail right at the Ken Burton junction. The team spent the morning re-benching very narrowed tread to a passable width. MWBA volunteers last worked this section in 2022, and it was great to be back at the floor of the canyon restoring one of our favorite San Gabriel backcountry trails.
We have are back working this section of trail again in July. We hope to clean up the entire "Dam Bypass" and remaining wash section of the Gabrielino in time for late summer riding. Expect our crew to put a major dent in the shady, poison-oak infested climb and descent over the dam. We can use your help!
